ALTA: Soho Welcomes, Northern Spanish Cusine
ALTA — Basque fire & artful design
Soho’s Kingly Court has welcomed ALTA an exciting new fine dining and design-led destination, merging open-fire cooking, regional Basque flavours, and the creative flair of acclaimed chef Rob Roy Cameron.
A New Chapter for Soho Dining
Tucked into the heart of Carnaby’s Kingly Court, ALTA will open in the largest restaurant space in the iconic dining hub. Spread across two expansive floors, a private dining room, and an outdoor terrace, ALTA will seat more than 100 guests in a design-driven space that reflects the earthy tones and raw elegance of Northern Spain.
The restaurant takes its name from the Alta Navarra peninsula, which stretches from Pamplona to Donostia in the Basque country, a region famed for its culinary heritage, convivial dining culture, and obsession with fire-kissed flavours. ALTA aims to become not just another new opening in Soho, but a destination restaurant in London for both discerning locals and international travellers.
The Chef: Rob Roy Cameron
Heading up the kitchen is Rob Roy Cameron, whose pedigree includes legendary institutions such as El Bulli, Albert Adrià’s 41 Degrees, and Barcelona’s Michelin-starred Hoja Santa. After more than a decade immersed in Spanish gastronomy, Cameron returned to London where he most recently held the role of Executive Chef at Gazelle.
With ALTA, Cameron draws on his time in the Basque region to create a menu that celebrates open-fire cooking, bold seasonal flavours, and the union of Spanish technique with the British larder.
The Menu: From Escabeche to the Grill
ALTA’s food will be rooted in the traditions of Northern Spain while showcasing produce from some of the UK’s most exceptional suppliers. Dishes will feature low-carbon, sustainable ingredients from small-scale farmers, fisherfolk, and growers:
Snacks and Small Plates: Razor clams in white saffron escabeche, seabass crudo with red gooseberry, sardine empanada with piparra emulsion, chicharrón with mojo rojo.
From the Grill: Whole seabream, turbot head, 35-day aged beef sirloin, hen of the wood’s mushrooms, Iberico pork bred in Shropshire by chef Brett Graham.
Vegetables & Salads: Courgette with pumpkin seed romesco, baked beetroot with almonds and balsamic, Cornish mussels with grilled bread.
Desserts: Chocolate mousse with smoked olive oil meringue, St Jude’s cheese & honey biscuits, and the indulgent La Viña cheesecake — a Basque classic.
The menu is designed for sharing, echoing the social dining culture of San Sebastián’s pintxo bars and cider houses, while elevating the experience to suit luxury dining in London.
Cocktails & Wine: A Culinary Approach
The drinks offering at ALTA has been curated by Dino Koletsas (formerly of Harrods and The Artesian at The Langham). Like the food, the cocktails will take inspiration from Spain while showcasing artisanal European spirits and small-batch British producers.
Expect bold, savoury, culinary-driven flavours:
Pine Martini – vodka, pine, vermouth, birch water
Little Pepper – smoked red pepper, tequila, tomato, vermouth
Cherry Kalimotxo – cherry wine, cola cordial, white port, fernet, soda
Dead Stone Daisy – espelette, tequila, lime agave, umami seasoning
Influenced by the Basque country’s prolific cider culture, ALTA will serve a selection of ciders from UK producers who focus on both ancestral and modern techniques, with examples to include Little Pomona from Herefordshire, Naughton Cider from Scotland and Wilding cider from Somerset. A few sherries will sit alongside ALTA’s aperitifs, including a Spanish vermouth on tap.
Design & Interiors
ALTA’s interiors, spread across 5,591 square feet, will fuse rustic elegance with modern luxury. Expect a palette of muted earthy tones, exposed brick, raw wood, and natural stone. At the heart of the ground floor is a dramatic open-fire grill on the ground floor alongside a chilled counter displaying the catch of the day, surrounded by both standalone and banquette seating. Guests can also enjoy a private dining room for up to 12, or the heated terrace overlooking Kingly Court – enough for 14 guests, a rare alfresco option, open all year round.
Visionary Artwork
Adorned across ALTA’s exposed brick walls, Thaiwijit Puengkasemsomboon is a well-known Thai artist, living and working in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Thaiwijit earns his reputation from his striking abstract expressionism art with exceptional compositions and joyful colour applications.
