Bocci 14p
The Evolution of an Iconic Design for Indoor and Outdoor Living
When Bocci first launched the 14 series in 2005, designed by creative director Omer Arbel, it became an instant design classic. Its success established Bocci’s international reputation and laid the foundation for a brand celebrated for material experimentation, poetic imperfection, and a distinctive approach to lighting.
The Origins of the 14 Series
The original 14 pendant is deceptively simple yet technically remarkable. Two cast-glass hemispheres converge to form a sphere, their meeting point defined by a textured equator. A diamond-drilled passage allows Bocci’s bespoke hardware to be seamlessly integrated, creating a pendant that is both functional and sculptural.
What made the 14 series extraordinary, however, was a serendipitous discovery. As the glass cooled, a meniscus formed at the equator. This subtle curve altered the way light refracted through the glass, creating the unique rippling, watery glow that became synonymous with the design. Had the hemispheres joined flatly, this effect would not have occurred. Instead, the imperfection revealed an unexpected beauty, perfectly aligning with Bocci’s ethos of celebrating the unplanned.
Reimagining the Classic: 14p
Nearly two decades later, Bocci has reimagined this iconic design as 14p—a portable, wireless table light that brings the essence of the 14 series into new contexts. Retaining the cast-glass construction and signature imperfect equator, 14p transforms the pendant into an intimate, candle-like object.
Compact and versatile, the piece offers three levels of ambient light, adjusted with a simple press. Its rechargeable design, compatible with USB-C, charges in just 45 minutes and delivers between 8 hours at full brightness and 80 hours at its lowest setting.
Portable Lighting and Outdoor Living
In recent years, portable lighting has become one of the biggest trends in design. As lifestyles evolve towards greater flexibility and more time spent entertaining at home, the demand for wireless, adaptable lighting has grown rapidly. Bocci’s 14p answers this perfectly, offering the atmosphere of a sculptural glass pendant in a portable form.
The piece is particularly suited to outdoor living—whether it’s creating a romantic glow on the dining table, illuminating garden gatherings, or adding a sense of intimacy to an evening terrace. Its portability means it can move seamlessly from indoor to outdoor spaces, making it as versatile as it is beautiful.
It is for these reasons that we have selected Bocci 14p for our Gardens & Nature section of The Fluxx. The design bridges the natural and the crafted, offering an ambient glow that complements the beauty of outdoor settings while remaining rooted in Bocci’s tradition of material innovation.
Design Philosophy and Lasting Impact
By introducing 14p, Bocci continues its exploration of light, form, and imperfection. The portable edition does not merely adapt a classic but extends its relevance, showing how timeless design can evolve with technology and lifestyle needs.
Whether used singly as a glowing object on a table or grouped in multiples to create a luminous constellation, 14p captures the same magical atmosphere that defined the original pendant. It embodies Bocci’s belief that beauty often lies in chance discoveries—a philosophy that has shaped the brand’s design language for two decades.
Bocci 14p is more than a portable light—it is the continuation of a story that began with Omer Arbel’s first design for the brand. By merging the original’s poetic qualities with contemporary mobility, it offers a new way to experience Bocci’s celebrated glow.
As portable lighting continues to redefine how we illuminate our spaces, 14p stands out as a piece that is not only functional but also deeply atmospheric, making it the perfect companion for both interiors and the garden.
