Rubra Punta Mita: Where Sculptural Architecture Meets the World-Class Cuisine of Daniela Soto-Innes

Designed by Ignacio Urquiza and Ana Paula de Alba for globally celebrated chef Daniela Soto-Innes, Rubra redefines destination dining on Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit through monolithic pink concrete architecture and deeply place-driven cuisine.



On Mexico’s Pacific coast, where the Sierra Madre Occidental meets Bahía de Banderas, Rubra unfolds as both architectural intervention and culinary destination, a place where space, material and gastronomy are conceived as one continuous experience.

Designed by Ignacio Urquiza and Ana Paula de Alba for internationally acclaimed chef Daniela Soto-Innes, the restaurant sits within the Punta Mita peninsula, approached by a path edged with lush vegetation that intentionally separates visitors from the surrounding resort context. A low, compressed entrance tunnel opens into a terrace oriented toward mountain and ocean views, establishing an immediate dialogue between architecture and landscape.

A Monolithic Architecture Rooted in Place


Rubra is constructed almost entirely from pigmented, textured concrete, conceived as a single-material structure whose tone recalls the sand of the Pacific shoreline. The building reads as a monolithic composition, yet softened by rounded edges that reference regional coastal architecture.

A series of volumes of varying heights organise the programme, open kitchen, wine cellar, bars and seating, structuring views outward while concealing neighbouring development to create a sense of seclusion. Above, a pergola roof spans a large column-free space, filtering daylight through wooden lattices to produce a calm, diffused interior atmosphere.

Between Jungle and Ocean


Integrated planting introduces endemic species directly into the architecture, blurring boundaries between interior and exterior so that diners feel immersed in the region’s coastal ecology. Cross-ventilation channels sea breezes through the open structure, reinforcing the sensation of an outdoor environment even within shaded areas.

At Rubra, architecture sets the stage for the expressive cuisine of Daniela Soto-Innes, one of the most celebrated chefs of her generation and recognised among the world’s top culinary talents.

Her menu draws deeply from the surrounding land and sea, interpreting Mexican coastal cuisine through seasonality, movement and freshness. Rather than formal fine dining, the approach is fluid and place-driven — dishes that feel inseparable from the climate, ingredients and rhythm of Riviera Nayarit.

This alignment between kitchen and architecture ensures the experience unfolds holistically, from arrival and atmosphere to the final course.

A Total Design Project Down to the Smallest Detail

Nearly every element at Rubra was custom designed, from furniture to service pieces, reinforcing the project’s identity as a unified work rather than a layered interior. Invited makers developed bespoke tableware and objects specifically for the restaurant, embedding craft into the everyday rituals of dining.

The repetition of a single material and the careful orchestration of light, shade and vegetation create a discreet intervention, an architecture that removes distraction to foreground experience.

Staying in Punta Mita: Extending the Rubra Experience


Rubra is best experienced as part of a longer stay along Riviera Nayarit’s design-conscious coastline.
